ChIA
Accessing and analysing cultural images with new technologies
The ChIA project tests combinations of novel computer-aided methods (visual search, chatbot technologies) and established digital tools (semantic thesauri) that have not yet been used in this way for image access or cultural analysis in the context of Europeana Local – Austria. As 2018 has been declared the European Year of Cultural Heritage and proclaimed by the European Commission under the motto ‘Sharing Heritage’, science and technology play an important role in favour of cultural heritage. This is the case in both the real physical and digital spheres. In addition, food is an integral part of the cultural wealth of humanity and also has a firm place in UNESCO’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

ChIA aims to improve Europeana’s data accessibility by creating an intermediate architecture for embedding and applying the proposed digital tools. At the same time, it enables enhanced and enriched search possibilities and insights for scientists and citizens alike. In addition, the project functions as an experimental field for artificial intelligence (AI) in a digital cultural context, in which the experimental setting can open up new perspectives for other networked disciplines. It also serves as a showcase example for similar future projects for the application and improvement of digital methods in the context of collaborative projects.
