European Data Space for Cultural Heritage
In November 2021, the European Commission published a recommendation for a common European data space for cultural heritage. The aim is to accelerate the digitisation of cultural assets in the Member States.
The European Common Data Space for Cultural Heritage is an initiative of the European Union, funded under its Digital Europe program. The European Common Data Space for Cultural Heritage builds on the Europeana Digital Service Infrastructure (Europeana DSI) and the Europeana Strategy 2020-2025. It will be linked to relevant European, national, and regional initiatives and platforms and provide interoperable access to cultural heritage data.
Europeana, the European digital culture platform, will form the basis for building this common data space for cultural heritage. It will enable museums, galleries, libraries, and archives across Europe to share and reuse digitized images of cultural heritage, 3D models of historic sites, and other high-quality digital cultural objects.
AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH continues its partnership with Europeana in the implementation of the data space for cultural heritage and coordinates the aggregation activities for OpenUp! in cooperation with the Berlin Botanical Garden (currently >13 million datasets). Another area of work is dedicated to supporting the contribution of digital data in IIIF format.
Tasks of OpenUp! / AIT
• Data mapping: natural history materials and Europeana (ABCD(EFG), DwC, LIDO, MARC21, EDM, DC)
• Enrichment of existing data
• Integration of numerous data sets and making them accessible via the Internet for the first time
• Multilingual presentation of the data
• Training for content partners (e.g. IIIF)
• Development of strategies for the sustainability of services
