REGNET

Cultural Heritage in REGional NETworks

The aim of the REGNET project was to pave the way for cultural organizations to further exploit the investments in digitization, storage and archiving of surrogates of their original objects.

AIT Forschungsgesellschaft mbH coordinated this project within the framework of the EU research program IST. At the time, it was the largest EU project in the IST program in the cultural sector.

As part of REGNET, service centers (Cultural Service Centers) were established for cultural organizations (museums, libraries, archives, galleries), artists, professionals, tourists, etc., offering support in the creation and operation of databases, the development of information products and services, and entry into e-business. The integration of museum shops served to market “digital” goods with “real” products.

Another goal was to present cultural assets of particular regional significance via the Internet and to market the associated digitized information. Access to the service centers via wireless communication was also tested within REGNET.

REGNET was successfully completed on March 27, 2003, in Luxembourg.
