MOSAIC
Museums Over States and vIrtual Culture

MOSAIC saw itself as a pioneer and initiator for the creation of economic concepts for the exploitation of multimedia cultural content.
MOSAIC (Museums Over States And Virtual Culture) was a project within the “Trans-European Telecommunications Networks for Access to Europe’s Cultural Heritage” sector of the TEN-Telecom program of the 13th Directorate-General of the European Union. The project, which began in the summer of 1997, was divided into a feasibility study (year 1), implementation (within the first two years), and market deployment (from the third year onward).
The TEN-Telecom program aimed to realize modern, technologically advanced infrastructures in Europe. Particular emphasis was placed on the deployment and development of new concepts, including their social and economic components. The program was intended to bridge the gap between technical development and commercial use in global communications and help create a business model for new market development.
As a TEN-Telecom project, MOSAIC had to be able to finance itself in the public interest in the future. This was tested through pilot applications during the implementation phase. In the MOSAIC project, these pilot applications included national and regional cultural service centers.
AIT was an associated partner in the international EU project MOSAIC (Museums Over States and virtual Culture), which aimed to offer a clearly defined and individually optimized range of solutions for the needs of cultural institutions in the areas of multimedia production and automation in a European and international environment.
