DOMI

Digital Openness for the Association of Archaeological Museums of South Styria through the use of IIIF

In the DOMI project, a total of 220 3D objects from partner institutions of the Association of Archaeological Museums of South Styria are being opened up for further digital processing using fe. artificial intelligence tools.

By converting object data to the IIIF standard, enriching it with annotations and publishing it as datasets and virtual collections, the objects are made standardised, digitally reusable and internationally networkable for further processing with artificial intelligence tools.

The DOMI project aims in particular to make descriptive data available to the public and researchers in a format that facilitates its further (re-)use in artificial intelligence applications. To this end, metadata licensed under CC0 is automatically converted into IIIF format, and IIIF manifests (JSON files) with links to the 3D objects are generated. The IIIF standard reuses the W3C Web Annotation Data Model, which generates annotations in an international standard and includes them in the descriptive data for further re-use. This functionality is also provided by the project.
Without meaningful grouping of data, there is often a risk of distortion, poor generalisability and inefficient machine learning. For this reason, DOMI also implements a functionality for grouping the descriptive data (with links to the 3D objects) into so-called ‘datasets’.
